About the Event

Join us for a special event dedicated to "The Sociologist's Wife," a compelling exploration into the lives and contributions of women married to eminent British sociologists during the crucial post-war period when sociology was defining its place in understanding British society. This event will not only feature a screening of the film but also provide an opportunity to delve deeper into the research behind the narrative and to hear from the filmmaker about their role in the project.

How have these women's unseen efforts influenced the sociological landscape we navigate today? Through interviews with Professors Ros Edwards and Val Gillies, as well as the adult children of these women, the film sheds light on the significant yet overlooked contributions these wives made to their husbands' work. Additionally, insights from author and social historian David Kynaston enrich the narrative, drawing attention to the hidden impacts these women had on the discipline.

This is a unique chance to reflect on the hidden histories of sociology, the role of collaboration in scholarly work, and the ways in which personal and professional lives intersect in the pursuit of understanding social life. What can these stories tell us about the ongoing development of sociology and its relevance to contemporary issues? This exploration into the unseen forces shaping sociological thought and practice not only uncovers past contributions but also prompts us to consider the broader implications of recognition, equity and diversity in the academic world and beyond.

Hear first-hand from filmmaker Catherine McDonald and researchers Ros Edwards and Val Gillies as they discuss the genesis of the project, the discoveries made about the wives’ contributions to sociological work and the impact of their often unseen efforts on the field. The presentations will be followed by an interactive Q&A where you can engage directly with Ros, Val and Catherine.

Don't miss this enlightening conversation about the uncovering of stories that have shaped our discipline in ways previously unrecognised.
