Sport Study Group

The BSA Sport Study Group was established in 1995 and aims to promote research and scholarship in the sociology of sport. In the absence of a national Sociology of Sport association in the UK, this group seeks to represent the professional interests of those engaged in the sociology of sport. We explicitly wish to raise the profile of the expertise in the sociology of sport within the discipline of sociology more generally and in public debates as well as generate links and liaise with appropriate national and international groups with complementary scholarly interests.

The core Sport Study Group event is the Postgraduate Conference that is held on the first Friday of September every year. In 2020, the event was kindly hosted by Brunel University.

The Sport Study Group also organises other events, including regular teaching events. In 2020, this event was kindly hosted by Solent University. If you have any ideas for events, please contact the convenors.

The Study Group hosts occasional events on important issues in the sociology of sport, including events on teaching sociology of sport. If members wish to host an event, then the BSA can support the administration and promotion of the event. Please contact the convenors for more details. The convenors try to raise the profile of sociology of sport at the BSA Annual Conference (details: with dedicated Sport sessions in the Food, Sport and Arts stream, as well as holding Stream Plenaries. The convenors also hold a Sport Study Group members meeting at the Annual Conference where members can share their views and feedback.

There is a mailing list where members can share details of upcoming conferences, calls for papers and information pertinent to members. In order to minimise the amount of emails we receive, we kindly ask that notifications of new publications are NOT sent to the mailing list.

To subscribe to the mailing list, go to the following link and click ‘Subscribe’ [in the top left hand corner]:

Membership of the study group remains free to all BSA members, students and the unwaged. If you are not a member of the BSA, then details of membership can be found here:
