Getting Real about Crime – Left and Right Realism

A BSA supported event for non-specialist A-Level Sociology Teachers

5 March 2026 (16:30-17:15 GMT)
Online

About the Event

This event is designed to support non-specialist (and specialist) A Level Sociology teachers in understanding some activities to develop applied understanding and evaluative skills specifically for AQA Paper 3 and topic of realism. We will share best practice, pedagogical tips and contemporary examples of how best to delivery that tricky topic of realism. We will also have the opportunity for questions and queries regarding AQA Paper 3 - Crime to be submitted and answered by our exam board expert.

Event Overview

Introductions
A brief welcome and outline of our second teacher event on ‘Realism’.

Main Session 1
During the session, Sunny, Nadine, and Kim will each share a teaching activity which supports AO2 and AO3 teaching of right or left realism. A Padlet/chat board will run alongside the session so teachers can share their own approaches to teaching realism. We’ll collate and share these contributions with delegates afterwards.

Main Session 2 – Meet the Exam Board Expert
Delegates will be asked to submit one or two question regarding AQA paper three – crime. We are asking delegates to focus on the crime section of the paper, which includes seeking advice on content, exam skills or feedback. Our exam board expert has taught Sociology for 24 years and is now the AQA subject advisor.

Conclusions
Closing remarks, thanks, and a quick invitation for delegates to share feedback via a short questionnaire (positive points, areas for improvement, and suggestions for the next event on Culture and Identity in Summer 2026).

Post-Event
We’ll share the PowerPoint slides, salient points raised from the chat feature, and any other resources our AQA subject advisor – Sarah, deems helpful with the teaching of realism and wider paper 3 crime. We’ll also circulate a short SurveyMonkey feedback form.
