Religion, Disability and Neurodivergence – Reflecting on the SocRel Response Day 2025

A BSA Sociology of Religion Study Group Event

29 March 2025 (10:00-16:00 GMT)
Kings College London, UK

About the Event

On 29 March 2025, the BSA SocRel Study Group will host a response day dedicated to exploring disability and neurodivergence within the context of religion. This event builds on insights from scholars such as Deborah Creamer, who highlighted the limited attention paid to religion within disability studies - a significant oversight given the central role religion and religious communities can play in the lives of disabled individuals (Creamer, 2006; Eiesland, 2002; Jacobs, 2022).

Addressing the voices and experiences of disabled and neurodivergent individuals within religious contexts is essential for fostering inclusivity and advancing broader decolonial approaches within the sociology of religion and religious studies.

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr Naomi Jacobs from Manchester Metropolitan University, who will discuss themes such as accessible and inclusive research methods, the dynamics of power and voice in the field, and the importance of considering intersecting identities, including ethnicity and class.
