What does it mean to live well, and can we measure it?

A BSA Happiness Study Group Event

13 October 2026 (10.30am-12.00pm GMT)
Strand Palace Hotel, London, UK

About the Event

We are delighted to welcome Professor Paul Dolan of the London School of Economics and Political Science to launch the British Sociological Association's Happiness Study Group Seminar Series.

In this thought-provoking session, Professor Dolan will explore the question:

“What does it mean to live well, and can we measure it?”

The seminar will take place from 10:30am to 12:00pm on 13 October 2026 at the Strand Palace Hotel, London.

One of the world's leading behavioural scientists, Paul Dolan has transformed the way we think about happiness, wellbeing, and decision-making. He is the author of several bestselling books, has worked closely with Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman, and was awarded a Leverhulme Prize for his pioneering research on Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs).

Whether you are interested in the study of happiness, sociology, public policy, behavioural science, or the measurement of well-being, this promises to be an insightful and engaging discussion on one of the most important questions of our time: how can we define and measure a life well lived?
