Huey P. Newton: Philosopher/Panther
A BSA Activism, Social Movements and Revolutions Study Group Event
19 August 2026 (18.30-20.00 BST)
MayDay Rooms, 88 Fleet Street, London, EC4Y 1DH
About the Event
The Activism, Social Movements and Revolutions Study Group invite you to a discussion of the book Huey P. Newton: I am We (Polity, 2026) with the author, Delio Vásquez (NYU) and discussant John Narayan (KCL), chaired by Birgan Gokmenoglu (BCU).
About the Book
Against standard narratives about Huey Newton - the leading co-founder of the famous Black Panther Party - which depict him as either a criminal or a hero, this new book establishes him as a true philosopher. Drawing on dozens of unpublished manuscripts, Huey P. Newton: I am We lays out the full scope of his thought, ranging from decolonial critiques of globalization and modern ‘technocracy’ to feminist thought and phenomenology. The book also uncovers strategies originally hidden by the Panthers, as well as rarely discussed forms of government repression, both of which remain relevant for social movements today.
