Keith Tester (1960-2019)

The BSA is sad to learn of the death of Keith Tester, Professor of Sociology at Hull and an expert on culture and morality.

Professor Tester worked at Hull since 2008, having previously been Professor of Cultural Sociology at the University of Portsmouth. He also worked at Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Korea and as visiting professor at the Bauman Institute at the University of Leeds.

Professor Tester served on the editorial boards of The Journal of Classical SociologyJournal of Human Rights and Thesis Eleven. 

Professor Tester studied for his PhD at the University of Leeds, and a book written from his thesis, Animals and Society (1991), was awarded the British Sociological Association’s Philip Abrams Memorial Prize for best first sole-authored sociology book in 1992.

Other works include: The Two Sovereigns: Social Contradictions of European Modernity (1992), The Flaneur (1994), and Compassion, Morality and the Media (2001).
