Mid-Career Forum

Overview

The Mid-Career Forum provides tailored support for sociologists at the challenging mid-career stage, typically around 8–10 years post-PhD onwards. This special interest group bridges the mid-career gap, recognising the unique pressures mid-career sociologists face, including increased publication expectations, securing research funding, assuming leadership and management roles, and balancing extensive teaching responsibilities.

Our Aims

  • Foster a supportive community navigating mid-career pressures and transitions.
  • Support diverse and non-linear career pathways, including teaching-focused, interdisciplinary roles, and those returning after career breaks.
  • Share practical strategies around mentorship, public sociology, grant writing, REF contributions, and leadership.
  • Enhance ongoing member engagement and retention beyond early-career support.

Activities

  • We offer a range of inclusive and practical activities:
  • Regular online writing groups and reflection workshops.
  • 'Mid-Career Reboot' networking and development events.
  • Conference panels addressing significant mid-career issues.
  • A blog series highlighting experiences, challenges, and strategies from diverse mid-career sociologists.
