Abstract Submissions

Abstract submission is CLOSED.

Since the classic sociological theorists, analysis of modern work has been a lynchpin of sociology. The 2018 Work, Employment and Society Conference seeks to revisit the origins of the discipline and advance current sociological understandings of work. WES 2018 will provide an imaginative space for sociology and cognate disciplines to consider what work is and to develop our interdisciplinary understanding of today’s increasingly intersectional sites of paid and unpaid work. Hence, the theme of the conference: ‘Putting Sociology to Work – interdisciplinary, intersectionality and imagination’.

Streams are not rigidly enforced and are described here to facilitate our assignment of papers.

  • Body work and emotional labour
  • Gender, work and social reproduction
  • Global political economy, comparative analysis and the changing regulatory role of the state
  • In and out of work poverty/ precariousness
  • New and old inequalities
  • New technology, the green economy and sustainable economy and work
  • Open
  • Professions, occupations, skills and social mobility
  • Social movements, unions, representation and voice
  • Transnational labour migration
  • Unpaid and unfree work

Categories for abstract submissions:

  • Conference papers: Abstracts should be up to 500 words. While the organising team particularly encourages papers reporting research findings, they also welcome abstracts related to sociological theory, social policy, ‘work in progress’ or those testing out new and imaginative ideas. All abstracts are refereed and papers must not have been previously published or presented elsewhere. Abstract contents should enable the referees to determine what issue, development or problem is being investigated, how it is being investigated, what the findings are and what contribution is being made to knowledge in this field. Please provide information about the theoretical position of the paper, the methodology, data set (if relevant) and the stage of the research. In addition to regular paper sessions, WES 2018 will include poster presentations. At time of submission please indicate whether you are interested in presenting your paper as a poster.
  • Special sessions: Abstracts should be up to 500 words. These may offer theoretical, empirical, methodological or policy-related contributions. The sessions will last for 1.5 hours and, while the team anticipates that most special sessions will involve three speakers, with or without a discussant, more creative formats are welcome. Please indicate in your application whether speakers are confirmed or provisional.
  • Pre-conference doctoral workshop (11 September 2018): This is free to doctoral students who have registered for the main conference and will take place at Queen’s University Belfast. Abstracts submitted to the pre-conference workshop should be up to 250 words. There will be opportunities for feedback and to meet fellow students and academics in the field, before the conference starts. Papers submitted to the doctoral pre-conference workshop may also be submitted to the main conference.

The 2018 conference committee are keen to ensure that the conference is inclusive and all venues will be fully accessible. The format of the conference is designed to accommodate academics at all career stages, with career development and networking events as well as paper presentations, special sessions and poster presentations.
