About the Event

The sociology of emotions has continued to grow over recent years, illuminating the emotionality of social life across social and historical contexts. The social and political crises facing sociologists at the end of the 21st century’s second decade have coincided with re-evaluations of the sociological canon, increased interest in interdisciplinarity, and richer collaborations between academics and non-academic knowledge producers. This moment of turbulence and opportunity invites us to consider the role of emotions in creating and transforming social relations across the complex entanglements of localities and histories. For this year’s annual symposium, presentations will be given on any area of historically or spacially situated emotionality from scholars working on emotion and affect from across the social sciences and humanities.  Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Emotions in historical context
  • Emotions and institutions
  • Emotions and culture
  • Lived emotional and affective experience
  • Emotions in power and politics
  • Theorising emotion and affect
  • Emotions in methodology and methods for studying emotion
