About the Event

We are pleased to invite you to this symposium, which brings together feminist scholarship and narrative research. We aim to provide a space to explore some of the opportunities and challenges of using the feminist narrative method of data analysis - the Listening Guide - for critical understanding and making sense of women’s storytelling and lives.

Keynote Speaker

  • Professor Natasha Mauthner (a founder of the Listening Guide), Newcastle University - The Listening Guide Feminist Method of Narrative Analysis: Second-wave feminism’s identity politics and voice-giving project

Workshop facilitators:

  • Kate Smith, University of Huddersfield
  • Kelly Lockwood, University of Salford
  • Sophie Alkhaled, Lancaster University
  • Michaela Rogers, University of Sheffield

The symposium will include:

  • A focus on the history, theory and practice of the Listening Guide, as a feminist narrative method of data analysis.
  • Workshops on using the Listening Guide.
  • Research with women seeking asylum, mothers in prison, female entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia, trans-women’s experiences of personal and intimate relationships and domestic abuse.
  • An exhibition of I Poems – “Listening To Women’s Stories”.
  • A photography exhibition of "Women’s Everyday Objects in Carceral Spaces".

This thought-provoking event will appeal to students and scholars of women’s studies, feminist and narrative researchers, social policy and practice, sociology, and those interested in research methods.
